Hello and welcome!

Before I share with you how you can give your young child a tremendous start in life, let me first thank you for coming to this page.

I am very passionate about childhood education and the fact that you are exploring early mastery of reading for your young one makes me very excited!

The opportunity to help your child learn to read before the age of six can empower him or her to have a bright future.

And so I encourage you to go ahead and study this page from beginning to end. As a parent to another parent, I can promise you won’t regret it.

With Warmest Regards,

Mary Ellen Maunz

Does this sound like you?

Besides keeping your child healthy and safe:

  • Do you ever lie in bed wondering what kind of a life your children will have when they grow up, and what obstacles they will face?
  • Do you have a deep desire to see them succeed and maximize their potential?
  • Do you worry that the school system, though well meaning, may not be able to equip your children with the success skills they need?
  • Did you know that early childhood education is a common background of many of today’s successful inventors, scientists, artists and socially-conscious entrepreneurs?
  • Are you ready to take action today so that your child will have a better future tomorrow?
If you answered “Yes”…

to any of these questions chances are you may be looking for a solution to all of these dilemmas and concerns for your child’s future.

So what if I told you there is a proven way to dramatically increase your child’s future success? Would you be interested to know what that sure-fire method is?

I thought you would be, so allow me to expand a little bit.

The way you can help your child take charge of his or her future is through early mastery of reading.

If you are like most parents, you already know that early education is important. But you may not realize just how important it really is…

early childhood education struggles

And how much and in how many ways your children will be affected if they don’t learn to read at the optimal point in their development, by the age of six?

Don’t believe me?

Fair enough. So here are the facts…

Just the Facts Ma’am…

After examining the dismal results of American students (Program for International Student Assessment, 2012), which placed American students way down the line in international rankings, Arne Duncan, US Education Secretary called it a “picture of educational stagnation.”

He then added that America needs to:

“invest in early education, raise academic standards, make college affordable, and do more to recruit and retain top-notch educators.”

Did you notice that early education was first on his list? Why?

Because he understands, as we do, that the formative years hold the greatest potential for building lifelong skills, BEFORE a child can experience failure.

You see, too much of American education is based on the “intervention” model. And when does the school intervene?

AFTER a child has fallen behind.

By then, not only are many children struggling academically, but also their attitude toward learning and about themselves as students, has soured.

And so, making sure your child has the best early education is the single recommendation from the Education Secretary’s list you can control.

And how about this staggering finding?

“Participants’ reading and math ability at age 7 were linked to their social class a full 35 years later. Participants who had higher reading and math skills as children ended up having higher incomes, better housing, and better jobs in adulthood.

“The data suggest, for example, that going up one reading level at age 7 was associated with a…roughly $7,750, increase in income at age 42.

“The long-term associations held even after the researchers took other common factors into account.

These findings imply that basic childhood skills, independent of how smart you are, how long you stay in school, or the social class you started off in, will be important throughout your life.

And there are more and equally compelling reasons you should invest in your child’s early education as soon as possible.

A shocking truth

..though few parents realize it:

Children make up their minds about whether they will succeed in school or not by the middle of first grade — based largely on whether they can read or not.

Please contemplate this …90% of brain development takes place before the age of five…

By now, I hope you’ll agree with me that it is very important to make the most of this window of opportunity and help your child learn to read before that brief time flies by.

Plus, giving your child the gift of early mastery of reading will school-proof them…

“School-proofing” your child

Yes, you read that right. This was not a misspelling. You do need to school-proof your child and here’s why:

The American school system cannot offer you or your child a guarantee, even for learning the basic subjects.

According to the Program for International School Assessment (PISA), children from Vietnam and Lithuania rank much higher in overall educational scores than the US, even though those countries spend much less in education than we do.

And so, if more money won’t solve the problem, what will?

You!

Taking matters into your hands and making sure your child learns to read at an early age is the key to that great opportunity you so long to offer them.

At the same time, I think we can agree that even if you don’t equip your child with early reading skills, he or she will most likely learn to read. But at what level will your child learn to read if you only rely on the school system?

You see, there’s an educational concept called “functional illiteracy.” In simple terms, it means a child can read enough to pass their tests, but they lack the ability to really understand and act upon what they read.

Which means that when a functionally literate person joins the work force, they have lower chances to compete in the labor market or get a high-paying job.

By ensuring that your child masters reading before six, you safeguard them against the results of an imperfect educational system. Better still, you impart to them an early love of learning that will always be with them.

I know I’ll get in trouble for saying this but…

for the sake of your child’s future and my own mission to maximize every child’s potential, I just can’t hold back.

So here we go…. If you just rely on the well-meaning but non-performing school system for teaching your child to read and if you fail to act now:

  • You may be condemning your child to mediocrity.
  • Your child may pass through powerful stages of development without utilizing them to their greatest, natural extent.
  • You may be taking away one of the greatest opportunities they have to get a head start in life and get ahead.
  • You may be depriving them from unfolding their inherent genius that will not only serve them (and you) but society at large as well.

On a larger scale, if we, as a nation fail to act, we may be (and already are) putting our nation’s economic and security interests at risk.

There. I said it, and so let the chips fall where they may…

As you can imagine, I’ve been thinking about a solution to this problem for a long time.

And so, drawing upon more than 40 years of classroom development and corroborating academic research, I, along with my colleagues at the Age of Montessori organization, created the Royal Road to Reading Program.

The Royal Road to Reading is a series of instructional DVDs for the adult, accompanied with hands-on activities for the child. These “learning games” are designed and classroom-tested to empower young children up to age six to read.

This practical program will enable you to teach your child to read and attain early mastery, through:

  • Hands on activities
  • Age-appropriate fun games your child is sure to love
  • Monthly live webinar where we’ll present case studies and take the questions you may have

You see, this program is the world’s top solution to early mastery of reading and it’s definitely different from anything else on the market…

Why our early childhood reading program is different

Here’s what makes The Royal Road to Reading different from other programs:

  • Montessori principles: It uses the principles taught by Dr. Montessori over a century ago that are increasingly being applied in almost every nation on earth.
  • Brain research: It draws upon the latest findings of brain research.
  • Four decades of experience: It puts into practice the insights and skills I have accumulated over four decades of teaching young children to read.
  • Proven track record: The Royal Road to Reading program has been proven to work in schools and homes all over the world.
  • Fail-proof outcomes: In the 40 years of developing our program we have refined the sequence of learning that engages the child and creates successful learning all the time.
  • Complete system: Royal Road to Reading brings together the pieces that are missing in most other programs. Our complete system includes all the steps and sequences that build mastery in the child: Vocabulary, Sounds, Letters, Words and Sentences.

And so you get the best of both worlds: The traditional Montessori knowledge infused with modern research and my own proven methods that I tested and honed over the last few decades.

As one parent to another, I want you to know that reading is the single most important academic skill your child can learn.

You see, children who learn to read before 1st grade gain self-confidence and stay ahead of their peers through 12th grade and later in life.

So why risk losing such a precious opportunity?

When you help your child learn to read
at an early age, you can:

Give your child a gift for life. According to the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 60% of America’s high school seniors cannot read for comprehension. Don’t let this happen to your child. Lay the foundations that can help them succeed in whatever field they choose.

Nurture your child’s genius – we know not every child is a genius, yet every child has genius. Make sure your child can maximize his potential – Early reading before the age of six could very well be the key deciding factor. Imagine what your child can become when you help maximize his or her untapped potential.

Give your child an early start in strong self-esteem. Children have an innate desire to master their world. As they master new skills, they gain self-esteem. By facilitating their early reading skills, you help them gain self-esteem that will carry into adulthood. Your child can build his sense of self that includes, “I am a reader!”

Make sure you don’t let a great opportunity pass by. Brain research shows that the sensitive period for language development starts before birth and the spontaneous interest and capacity for writing and reading is 4 ½ to 6 – before traditional instruction even begins! Don’t let this brief window of opportunity pass you by—it can never be recaptured Your child’s brain will build key neural connections for future success.

Take control of your child’s education. Sadly, the American school system cannot offer you or your child a guarantee, even for learning the basic subjects; thus the need to school-proof your child. By ensuring your child masters reading before six, you safeguard them against an imperfect educational system. Plus, you impart to them an early love of learning that will always be with them.

Build a stronger relationship with your child. You can bond with your child at a deeper level when you become a vibrant part of his education. After all, parents are their children’s first (and often best) teachers! More than toys and gadgets, your child wants your attention and time. And not just any time, but quality time. Teaching your child to read is not only useful, but enjoyable as well. For both of you. So give your child the gift of yourself and bond as never before.

Best of all, give your child the joy of learning! Know that learning is to the brain as breathing is to the lungs. We don’t have to “make” our children learn, any more than we have to “make” the grass grow, IF we give them what they need, when they need it.

There is no reason to wait. Open the door to opportunity for your child now…with the Royal Road to Reading program.

Quick! What do the founders of Wikipedia, Amazon, and Google have in common?

Before we get to the burning question, let’s first consider the words of Dr. Montessori.

Maria Montessori, founder of the Montessori worldwide movement, had many distinctions. She was Italy’s first female medical doctor, chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Rome, and a three-time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

You may have heard of her and she was indeed a remarkable woman and pioneer. I am honored and humbled to mention that I was trained in the Montessori Method by Dr. Elisabeth Caspari, a student, colleague, and personal friend of Dr. Montessori.

Here are Dr. Montessori’s words on the capacity of young children to learn:

“A child’s sensitiveness to his own development arouses his enthusiasm for learning the alphabet and urges him on to make a phonetic analysis of words into their component sounds.

“Later, when the child is six or seven years old, the creative period will have passed, and he will no longer have the same natural interest in analyzing either the spoken or the written word.

“That is why little children as a rule make better and more rapid progress than those who are older.

“Instead of becoming bored and weary like the older children, they carry on a constant activity that seems to strengthen them.”

And so here’s what Google’s founders Larry Page and Sergei Brin, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, videogame pioneer Will Wright, and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, not to mention Julia Child, have in common:

They were all Montessori graduates!

And proud of it, as they credit both their intellectual prowess and their “out of the box” thinking to their Montessori education.

What’s critical to note here is that the Montessori educational approach, which our program utilizes could very well be the surest route for a child to join the creative elite—the very people who are so overrepresented by former Montessori educated children.

It all started with a friendship

Program creator Mary Ellen Maunz has 40 years of experience in Montessori…

teaching at the 2½ to 6 year-old and the 6 to 12 year-old levels, and administrating a large private school for 20 years.

Mary Ellen was trained over a four-year period as a Master Teacher by Dr. Elisabeth Caspari, personal friend and student of Maria Montessori, and was awarded a Master Teacher diploma in 1983. Caspari and Maunz remained close friends and worked together from their initial meeting in 1979 up until Caspari’s passing in 2002.

The legacy from Maria Montessori to Elisabeth Caspari to Mary Ellen Maunz is unbroken. Maunz continues to work in teacher education, teaching and lecturing on early childhood education across the globe.

Mary Ellen has an extensive background in
early childhood education behind her work:
  • Holds a BS in Child Development from the University of La Verne and a Masters Degree (M.Ed.) in Integrative Education with an emphasis on Montessori from Endicott College
  • Earned an AMI Montessori diploma for ages 2½ – 7 and a Pan-American Montessori Society diploma for ages 6 – 12
  • Has an extensive background as a school consultant and as the co-creator of a successful business in early reading products
  • Lead author of the book, Learning to Read is Child’s Play, published in 2000
  • Served as Commissioner for Accreditation and Member of the Board of Directors for the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) from 1992-2000
  • Held the position of Vice-President of the International Association of Montessori Educators (IAME) from 2001-2004
  • Served on the Board of Directors of Middle Creek Montessori in Bozeman, Montana from 2005-2007
  • Honored in 2013 with the Wisdom of the Elders Award for her leadership in the Montessori community
The Mindset of Early Childhood Education-Savvy Parents
  • Savvy parents know that empowering their young child to take charge of their future through early mastery of reading can help them better fulfill their potential and dreams, compete for top jobs as adults and build their self-esteem.
  • Savvy parents understand that if they don’t teach their child to read by the age of six, they are missing out on giving them a gift for life. They know that his window of opportunity can never be recaptured and so they act now to give their child early mastery of reading.
  • Savvy parents have a long-term investment mindset. They understand that a small investment in their child’s development today will bring a love for learning as well as huge long-term results of engagement in learning, and ability to follow any course of interest. They realize that teaching their child to read before the age of six is possibly one of the greatest contributions they can make to their future success.
  • Savvy parents have the highest expectations when it comes to maximizing their child’s future potential. They understand that the current school system is not an “engine of success” and that it’s their duty to take control of their child’s education. Furthermore, they put the intentions into action and equip their child with the skills necessary for substantial future achievements. This is the profile of a savvy parent.
  • Savvy parents seize the opportunity to teach their child to read early not only for their own sake, but also for the sake of the greater good. Savvy parents know that if they deprive their child from unfolding the inherent genius they have, society may be losing a great future inventor, scientist, artist or businessman.
  • Savvy parents realize that their child has an innate desire to become the master of his or her own world. They appreciate that their child has their own natural cycle for learning and they never need to force, push, or punish failure to learn. Rather, they “follow the child” and enable them to take advantage of their bursts of intelligence of the sensitive periods until their inner brilliance unfolds.
  • Savvy parents relish the opportunity to forge deeper relationships with their child while they teach them to read. All children want quality attention and time from their parents. And so savvy parents provide that and get to build a stronger, more meaningful relationship with their child. They deeply bond with their child by teaching them early mastery of reading.
  • Savvy parents embrace the mystery of their child’s development. They don’t compare their children to others, but rather realize that each child develops at a different pace. They are advocates for their child. Not only do they love and protect them, but also they respect, trust and honor them

Royal Road to Reading 3 DVDs

TOP KNOWLEDGE VIA 3 EXCLUSIVE DVDs: You get three top quality DVDS available nowhere else

You may recall that a previous section explained in great detail the content of each DVD. For your convenience, here’s a brief summary:

DVD #1: VOCABULARY

Children need to hear lots and lots of words to feed their hungry brains. In DVD #1 we will show you how to systematically build your child’s vocabulary and interest in stories. And, the more words they hear in the early years, the more successful they will be as adults.

DVD #2: SOUNDS AND LETTERS

  • Sounds-Breaking Words into Their Sound Parts: Children love to play with sounds. In this next step towards reading mastery your child learns to identify the sounds they hear in spoken words.
  • This essential skill called phonemic awareness builds a foundation for children to understand the foundations of sounds within words. And this has been shown to be the single, most important, skill for learning to read.
  • Building phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the smallest units of sounds in spoken words.
  • Identifying rhymes, finding the beginning sound in a word and separating the spoken word distinct phonemes are three ways your child will use phonemic awareness.
  • For example, the word “cat” would become /k/ /a/ /t/.
  • Letters-Translating Sounds into Letters: The second most important skill for a young child learning to read and write is learning the alphabet.
  • We will show you how to engage your child with fun activities that accomplish two things:
    • a) Develop swift and sure knowledge of the letters and their sounds, and
    • b) Help understand the alphabetic principle, i.e., the concept that letters represent speech sounds.

DVD #3: WORDS AND SENTENCES

  • When your child has mastered sounds and letters, he or she is ready to move to the final steps on The Royal Road to Reading: Words and Sentences.
  • In DVD 3 you will learn how to help your child take his new-found knowledge of sounds and letters and apply it to reading and writing, first words, then sentences and eventually full texts.
  • Imagine the thrill of being there with your child when he reads his first words!
  • We show you how to help your child take this magic step and then how to proceed systematically through useful sight words.
  • And we also show you how to approach multiple letter sound combinations, to ensure smooth sailing into total reading.

EXTRA HELP WITH A TON OF HANDS-ON MATERIALS: You get cutting-edge materials and activities

If you can play any board game, you can use this program

Using the Royal Road to Reading program is easy! And it doesn’t take much effort. In fact, it’s fun for you and your child.

I really want to stress this point because parents often share their fears with me that somehow they can’t see themselves as “teachers” of their children. To which, of course, I respond with a single word:

Nonsense!

No one knows your child as well as you do and no one cares more about your child’s future than you do.

I personally guarantee you can put the simple methods I’ll teach you to use. And I speak from decades of experience.

Whether you have any teaching experience or not, you can do this!

When you teach your child to read, you are helping develop her mind, expanding her heart through your love and instructing her little hands in how to write and read. It doesn’t get much better than that!

What’s more, if you have any leftover doubts about whether this road is for you, I want you to put any such thoughts aside. I want you have confidence in yourself and get ready for a fun adventure with your child.

A great opportunity to deeply bond with your child

The activities of the Royal Road to Reading program are interesting and fun. In addition, they are designed to pique the interest of your child whether at home or on a road trip.

And so, by teaching your children the fundamentals, you don’t just enable them to read. You are also building a stronger relationship with them.

In other words, when you take this opportunity to teach them, you don’t just give them a powerful gift for life, but you also bond with them at a deeper level.

As a mom and an educator, I consider this a very important outcome for both of you.

Following the child

As we mentioned earlier, we never push or force, but rather, we “follow the child.” When we learn to observe their needs a little better, we can offer the right help at the right time.

BY NO MEANS will you have to force your child to read. On the contrary, you will gently work together, while you fully respect their natural tendencies.

And if you are drawing a blank right now as to how you will gracefully follow your child, have no worries. Our program makes it very clear and gives you step-by-step instructions.

My vision for you and final piece of advice

“The Royal Road to Reading is a very authentic, no gimmick approach to guiding your children to reading mastery. Adult involvement and activities that you can do anywhere make it a very realistic program for busy parents.”

– Suzi R., mother of 2 ½ year old and 5
month old

We are amazed.

20-yr-teachers-love-royal-road-to-reading“We are amazed. After using the principles in this program, for the first time in our teaching careers, up to one-third of our children have started to read words, and it is only January.”

– Betty M. and Alice R, kindergarten
teachers with 25 years
of experience each

The children are eating it up

School-director-loves-royal-road-to-reading“You brought me a deeper and more expansive view of what can be done so easily…. Thanks again for the wonderful inspiration. The children are eating it up…my child did half of the matching cards and begged me to do more!”

—Richard C., Montessori school director,
Minneapolis, MN

A beautiful program

boy-successfully-uses-royal-road-to-reading“A comprehensive program. The step-by-step instructions are extremely thorough and easy to follow. Children love it and repeat the lessons many times while they are learning the principle!”

— Rebecca K. prekindergarten teacher

After playing these games, they are finally reading

boy-loves-Royal-Road-to-Reading“I started using this and seeming miracles occurred. Children who had been stuck on their letters for a long time began learning them in one sitting. Techniques for training the ear to hear the sounds in words had been missing in our language curriculum. Some of our children hadn’t been able to bridge the gap. After playing these games, they are finally
reading.”

– Kathryn H. Pre-K teacher

Give your child a lifetime gift that keeps giving
by ordering the Royal Road to Reading program right away

“America needs to invest in early education..”
Arne Duncan, US Education

“Later, when the child is six or seven years old, the creative period will have passed, and he will no longer have the same natural interest in analyzing either the spoken or the written word.”
Maria Montessori, MD, Education Pioneer

“The data suggest, for example, that going up one reading level at age 7 was associated with a…roughly $7,750, increase in income at age 42.”
